The first Sichuan International Tourism Expo officially kicked off on September 26th, 2014. This was truly an international event, with exhibitors from all over the world gathering in Leshan, a famous tourist city known for its beautiful mountains and waters. On the eve of the bustling National Day holiday, the opening of the expo set off a wave of excitement, bringing together global cuisines, products, and performances that tempted every citizen of Leshan. It was destined to be a city-wide celebration lasting until the end of the holiday.
At the expo, people enjoyed song and dance performances, tasted delicious food, and browsed through a dazzling array of products. However, few might have noticed the smiling faces of the service providers. They were not eye-catching, usually just nodding and smiling at the bustling crowds, their smiles fleeting in people's sight. Yet it was these seemingly insignificant smiles that filled the entire expo with a warm and beautiful atmosphere. Among them was a group of young people with distinctly Southeast Asian features, wearing white T-shirts with the logo of youth volunteers, moving around the Jiazhou Scroll exhibition area. They were international students from Leshan Vocational and Technical College.
In the Jiazhou Scroll exhibition area, it was easy to spot clusters of exhibition booths from Southeast Asian countries, with numerous merchants from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and other nations. Exhibitors speaking Thai, Lao, and other languages added an international flair to the expo, but also made language translation a key issue. Leshan Vocational and Technical College, in its efforts to enhance its educational capabilities and student quality, has long strengthened cooperation and exchanges with international institutions and attracted a large number of Southeast Asian international students from Laos and Thailand. These students, ranging from exchange students to degree-seeking students and from freshmen to seniors, are diligent, honest, and resilient. Some have been studying and living in Leshan for 2 or 3 years and can speak fluent Mandarin, while a few have even mastered the local Leshan dialect. The exhibitors in the Southeast Asian section were in urgent need of such translation talent. Similarly, the young people also needed opportunities to serve society, improve their abilities, and challenge themselves. Therefore, the international students from Leshan Vocational and Technical College gladly accepted this challenge. Through their cooperation with the expo organizing committee, exhibitors, and various participants, the students gained valuable experience, making the expo more lively and orderly, like a beautiful flower blooming in the golden autumn.
It was these lovely young people who worked from 9 a.m. to night, providing language translation and product display services, and fully dedicating themselves to the volunteer work at the expo. They successfully bridged the language gap and built a bridge for communication among people from different countries. They poured their youthful enthusiasm into social service and left their innocent smiles in every conversation. Their volunteer service was like a flame of youth that fueled this international event.
