Tasting delicious food, admiring beautiful scenery, learning Yi embroidery, and forming bonds with the Yi people... On December 1st, foreign teachers and international students from Leshan Vocational and Technical College visited the picturesque Ebian Yi Autonomous County for an exchange visit, immersing themselves in the unique cultural allure of the Yi ethnic group.
Upon arriving in Ebian, one must savor the unique peony flower tea and high mountain eagle tea.
The first stop for the foreign teachers and students was the Archery Ground Tourist Service Center. Cheng Dongjuan, the Minister of Publicity of the County Committee, acted as a tour guide. She introduced the historical and cultural background of Ebian to the visitors, starting from the legendary bet between Zhuge Liang and Meng Huo during the Three Kingdoms period, to the story of the Yi beauty goddess Ganmo Aniu, and finally to the new life of the Yi people after the reform and opening up. She covered the basic information about Ebian's history, culture, and local customs.
In Ebian, one must taste the authentic Yi cuisine. The hospitable Yi hosts served up a feast of Yi delicacies, including chunky pork, chunky chicken, sour cabbage tofu, Ebian cured ham, and buckwheat cakes. Each dish earned enthusiastic "nice!" exclamations from the foreign teachers and students.
After enjoying the Yi cuisine, the group visited a Yi village. They then headed to the Yi New Village in Didi Valley, Heizugou Town. There, they donned traditional Yi costumes and draped themselves in Yi shawls, experiencing the hand embroidery of Yi women. Of course, the most memorable experience was participating in a traditional Yi bonding ceremony with the villagers.
The Yi people are known as the "people of fire." How could a visit from friends afar be complete without a blazing bonfire? As night fell, a bonfire was lit on the playground of Xihexiang Middle School in Heizugou Town. The foreign teachers and students, along with the local students, gathered around the fire, holding hands and singing and dancing together.
William Lee from the United States and Svetlana from Russia also conducted an engaging English class for the students at Xihexiang Middle School. The combination of "games + teaching" left a deep impression on the children.
Throughout the day, filled with novel and interesting interactive activities, the foreign teachers and students experienced the Yi culture of Ebian through sight, taste, and participation. They expressed their intention to bring the nearly extinct traditional Yi culture to other parts of the world, showcasing it to a global audience.
