[Roots - Seeking Journey] Day Four in Leshan: The Moon over the Hometown Shines Brightest—Making Traditional Chinese Delicacies

Time:2019-08-06

At 3:30 p.m. on August 6, after a short rest, accompanied by the melodious and gentle singing of "When did the bright moon appear? With wine in hand, I ask the blue sky," the master chef from the Academic Exchange Center of Leshan Vocational and Technical College personally stepped in to teach the participants how to make traditional Chinese delicacies, hand - in - hand.

"Chinese culture is profound and extensive. There are so many folk festivals, and each festival has a touching story behind it," the Chinese - descendant teenagers exclaimed after listening to the master chef's lecture on traditional Chinese culture. The following session of learning to make traditional Chinese delicacies further ignited the enthusiasm of the Chinese - descendant teenagers. Mooncakes, tangyuan (glutinous rice balls), dumplings... These delicacies, which they usually only get to taste during Chinese festivals in Germany and Spain, were being made by their own hands for the first time.

"A small cake is like chewing the moon, with crisp and sweet inside." Kneading dough, dividing it, filling it, and using molds... At the mooncake - making site, under the master chef's hand - in - hand guidance, the participants quickly grasped the knack of making mooncakes. "Look, my mooncake is not bad, right?" They were full of praise for the mooncakes they made by themselves, taking out their mobile phones to take commemorative photos, and some even offered the mooncakes they made to the teachers to taste.

"A small dumpling warms the heart more than thousands of pieces of gold and silver." At the dumpling - making site, to help the participants better understand this traditional and characteristic food, the master chef first introduced in detail the historical origin, folklore, and symbolic meaning of dumplings to the participants. Then, the participants washed their hands carefully and began to make dumplings. The finished dumplings took on various shapes, and the classroom was filled with the participants' laughter and joy.

Some participants said that dumplings are an unforgettable attachment for every overseas Chinese. On New Year's Eve, they express their wishes for good fortune and their aspirations for a better life by eating dumplings. Dumplings have long been more than just a delicacy; they are a representative of Chinese cuisine. Every part of them embodies the culture of the Chinese nation.
