A Thousand Mountains and Rivers Always Show Affection, Crossing the Oceans to Meet You; Isn’t It a Pleasure to Have Friends Coming from Afar?

Since early September, 54 international students from four countries—Laos, Thailand, Nepal, and Malaysia—have successively registered and enrolled, beginning their academic life at Leshan Vocational and Technical College. With their arrival, the current number of international students at the college has reached 120, including degree students, exchange students, and language students. They are studying in various departments such as the Basic Public Courses Department, Medicine, Nursing, Finance and Management, Pharmacy, Tourism, Electronic Information Engineering, and New Energy Engineering, among others.

“Hello, Leshan Vocational and Technical College”

To ensure a smooth welcome for this year’s international students and to help them quickly adapt to their studies and life in China, enhancing their sense of belonging, the college has made meticulous and detailed arrangements.

Firstly, the registration process has been optimized to highlight humanistic care. Since early September, the International Cooperation Office, the International Student Management Office, international student counselors, and the International Student Union have been actively engaged in the welcome activities. They have arranged for dedicated staff to meet new students at airports and train stations. The college has also prepared the dormitories by cleaning the apartments and setting up the bedding for the new students. Upon arrival, the students have been assisted with accommodation registration at the local police station, the convenient processing of temporary campus cards, and the handling of bank and phone card applications. Additionally, they have been guided through the registration of student numbers and academic records, familiarized with the campus environment, undergone medical check-ups, and assisted with the application for residence permits. By refining various service details in the welcome process, international students are made to feel the warmth of the management and the faculty and students from the moment they step onto campus.

Secondly, the college has focused on delivering a strong first lesson of the semester to clarify academic tasks. On September 24th, the International Student Management Office held the “First Lesson for International Students” in Classroom 2C101. All international students, along with representatives from the International Cooperation Office, the Academic Affairs Office, the Student Affairs Department, and international student counselors, attended the lecture. During the session, the International Student Management Department provided explanations and interpretations of Chinese laws and university regulations. They also conducted safety and mental health education for international students. Furthermore, counselors engaged with the students in discussions about their majors, future prospects, and academic goals, helping them understand Chinese policies and regulations, stimulating their motivation to learn, and aiding their adaptation to campus life.

Thirdly, cultural and sports activities have been organized to enhance mutual understanding. The International Student Union hosted a series of cultural and sports activities for international students. On the morning of November 3rd, a badminton doubles match between new and returning international students was held in the college’s multi-functional gymnasium. A total of 11 male pairs and 9 female pairs participated in the competition. After an intense match, Luo Zhijie and Chen Kai from the Class of 2018 won first place in men’s doubles, while the women’s doubles championship was claimed by the team of Ou Li from the Class of 2016 and Lin Yichen from the Class of 2017. On the morning of November 4th, a campus-wide event for new and returning international students was held on the college sports field. Fun activities such as musical chairs, name tag tearing, and team games were organized to help international students build friendships and boost their motivation and confidence in their studies and life.

Through a series of welcome activities, timely guidance and detailed care have been provided to the new international students. These efforts have helped them integrate more quickly and smoothly into the campus life of Leshan Vocational and Technical College, reducing the difficulties of cross-cultural adaptation when they first arrive on campus and providing significant support for their academic and daily lives at the college.
